5 reasons why you should lose your phone

It is becoming more and more aware to me that phones get in the way. Throughout several classes/discussions/and conversations, I have come up with 5 reasons why you should lose your phone. For you people out there that couldn't live without a phone by your side, relax, this could simply mean for a couple hours. For you more bold, this could mean for a couple days. The fact of the matter is that we live in an interconnected world, and we need our phones to communicate, but believe me... you can go an afternoon without it, and you'll be better served for it. So here is my 5 reasons you should lose your phone (for however long you want to):

1 Imagination.

The floor is lava is the sweetest game ever created. Lately, kids are playing temple run, or the latest iPhone game, rather than dodging that lava by throwing a chair in it. Kids are becoming addicted to their screens faster than ever, and it is hurting the imagination in the world. When was the last time that you were sitting in a room waiting for something to start, or someone to meet you, and you didn't pick up your phone to mindlessly scroll? Imagination is no longer used to pass the time when waiting, and you no longer stare in front of you "using your imagination" (as my parents liked to say).

2 Relationships.

I have a challenge for you. If you're ever bored, go to a restaurant with a notepad and a pen. Throughout your time eating, people-watch (don't stare), and tally the amount of groups/couples/friends that have their phones in front of their face instead of talking to each other. With the invention of phones also came the lack of strong relationships.

Another challenge. When you go out to a group gathering, have everyone put their phones in a bucket. Leave your phone at the trailhead on a hike. Put your phones in the middle of the table when out to dinner. Anything and everything to keep your eyes away from the screens that kill conversation. "Buy into" your relationships, and have a good time talking to the people around you.

3 Creativity.

Everyone is a creative in their own regard. The trick is to tap into this creativity, and let it blossom like it can. Sadly, our phones can take away from this creativity and put us into a cycle. Next time you are trying to figure out something to do for the night, don't pick up your phone. Don't google "what to do tonight." Leave your phone on the ground, and let those gears in your mind start churning. It may take some time to let the dust blow off, and to get them working again, but simply doing this will get your mind working in more creative ways.

We did an exercise in one of my classes where we had to come up with a new use for the ping pong ball. I was astounded that my first reaction was to pick up my phone and look up possible uses for ping pong balls. The access to the internet and the millions of other opinions and ideas has killed my drive to have my own ideas. It killed my desire and confidence to use my brain to come up with a unique idea that I thought was sweet. Once my team and I started throwing ideas out there, it was amazing how your brain starts working. try it.

Stare at a blank piece of paper until something comes to mind. Walk around until your mind starts wandering to a new place. Look at a normal household object until you come up with another use for it. If you have a problem with something in your home, use your imagination to come up with a way to fix it, rather than "YouTubing" possible solutions.

The fact of the matter is that you need to capture that creativity you had as a kid, before the phones of the world polluted all of your novel ideas. Regain your creative nature, because we are all creatives in our own special ways.

4 Beauty.

Whenever I am on a hike, or on vacation and I see something that I absolutely love, I reach into my pocket to take a picture of it. The amount of times that I go back and look at a picture like this is slim to none. What I wanted to capture with my phone, wasn't a moment at all. Even when I was there, I was still experiencing the moment through the screen of my phone. In an attempt to remember a moment, I failed to have the moment at all.

Again, I am going to challenge you. Next time you are looking over the city with an amazing view. The next time you climb a mountain and see the beauty in front of you, or see literally anything else picture worthy, don't reach in your pocket. Stop. Slow down. "Take in" the experience in front of you. Realize the beauty you are seeing, close your eyes, smell, hear the sounds, tap into the experience and actually have the experience. Have a moment of silence looking over the valley below you, stop hiking and take in the scenery around you. After you have done this, and only AFTER, if you still feel the need to capture the moment. Do it. Snap one photo, and take another moment to experience everything around you. If you do this, I promise that when you stumble across that photo at a later date, its going to take you back to a moment, rather than just being a photo on a screen

Take the time to capture the beauty around you with your mind, rather than your screen.

5 SAFETY

Probably one of the more self-explanatory reasons to lose your phone, is safety. This is the safety of others, and also yourself. One large concern of the generation is texting and driving. Rather than explaining what safety means, I will leave you with one thing, don't compromise your safety by picking up your phone. don't do it. Protect yours, and others' lives by losing your phone in any circumstance that it could be a distraction. you'll be better for it.
If you want some stats explaining why phones are dangerous, check this out.

The truth is, these are only 5 out of a magnitude of reasons sufficient enough to get you to lose your phone for even just a couple hours. Realize the benefits that putting your phone away has for you, and change your life.

Let me know how these steps work for you.

Goodbye
